Originally developed to characterize man-made products, technology and systems, non-contact laser-Doppler vibrometry is also exploring measurements that unravel the mysteries of biological structures.


The heart beats, wings flap, sounds are sent out and received – life would be much too quiet without vibrations. To investigate vibrating systems in nature requires sensitive and flexible measurements that don’t disturb the specimen. At the heart of every Polytec vibrometer system is the laser Doppler vibrometer – a very precise optical transducer used for determining the vibration velocityand displacement at a point by sensing the frequency shift and phase variation of back scattered laser light from a moving surface



Single-point vibrometers measure the amount of vibration at a single point on an object's surface. It measures the projected component of an object's surface vibration vector along the direction of the incident laser beam. Tthe instrument is sometimes referred to as an out-of-plane vibrometer.

Special vibrometers such as High Frequency Vibrometers for ultrasonic applications, Rotational Vibrometers for torsional vibration measurement, In-Plane Vibrometers for transverse (in-plane) vibration measurement, Tri-Axial Vibrometers for simultaneous measurement of vibration along 3 axes and Long Range systems for remote sensing of velocity and displacement.

Scanning vibrometers are instrumental in better understanding how waves propagate in complex structures for various applications, from noise control at low frequencies to damage detection at ultrasonic frequencies.

Structural vibration measurement tasks is provided with scanning vibrometer solutions for frequencies from DC up to 24 MHz and vibrational velocities of 0.01 μm/s up to 20 m/s.

Microscope-based systems for a variety of Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), Polytec has developed an innovative line of microscope systems for the measurements of MEMS dynamics and topography, including 3D and Ulta-High frequency systems (1,2 GHz)
